Itinerant Teacher of Students with Visual Impairment - Full or Part Time

Seeking full- or part-time certified TVI or student enrolled in an accredited Master’s Program for Teacher of Students with Visual Impairment to join our team of TVI’s and COMS! We are willing to provide paid practicum and support in becoming a licensed TVI in exchange for expected job fulfillment for specified amount of time to be determined at interview. Massachusetts Department of Education Certification expected within a year of hire. Dual certification in TVI and O&M or Deaf-Blindness welcomed.
The Itinerant Teacher of the Visually Impaired provides direct and consultative vision services to students ages 3-22 with low vision, blindness, and CVI, as well as students with multiple disabilities in a 10 month position. Summer work is optional for additional hourly compensation. Services are provided to districts on the North Shore of Boston. Travel between schools/districts is required and mileage is reimbursed. This position is eligible for the MA Teachers Retirement System. Yearly phone stipend and computer or ipad provided. Competitive salary and benefits.

Location: Office located at Kevin O’Grady School, 112 Sohier Road, Beverly, MA; services provided to students enrolled in district schools (K-12) in the Massachusetts North Shore area and at the Kevin O’Grady school, serving students who are medically fragile, have multiple disabilities or autism

Qualifications

Braille proficiency and current knowledge of assistive and adaptive technology.
Excellent teamwork, communication and organization skills.
Ability to communicate in a highly effective manner.
Ability to understand, follow and deliver safety policies and procedures.
Ability to provide collaboration, leadership, and role modeling for classroom personnel.
Ability to receive professional direction, learn new skills, and work in a team setting.

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE: Masters Degree from an accredited college or University, Massachusetts Department of Education Certification - Teacher of the Visually Impaired; Dual certification in TVI and O&M or Deaf-Blindness welcomed. Currently enrolled students in Master’s Program for Teacher of Students with Visual Impairment are encouraged to apply.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION: MA DESE certification as Teacher of Students with Visual Impairment

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from staff and/or parents. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely in written and oral communication.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of special education regulations and procedures and the need to maintain confidentiality. Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Specific Duties: (Other duties may be assigned)
Consult with TEAM Members: Schedule and maintain communication among team members.
Conduct student assessments in functional vision, learning media and/or CVI Range and produce a comprehensive report in a timely manner.
Attend and report on findings or progress at annual and re-evaluation meetings and determine appropriate service delivery, accommodations and goals.
Acquire/Prepare/adapt large print or braille/tactual materials.
Administrative and record-keeping tasks including progress reports for district and Consortium locations, paperwork associated with evaluations and other related student documentation.
Assist students in achieving independence and make recommendations for development in the Expanded Core Curriculum.
Prepare and provide instruction directly to students with hands-on instruction, modeling, enlarged print, braille/tactual material or compensatory devices needed to help the student arrive at appropriate goals.
Instruct students in the use of assistive technology devices, apps and software specific to low vision and blindness
Seek out and participate in appropriate professional development.
